Repair broken render on Victorian bay sandstone window sill

Andrew asked 3 years ago
I have a Victorian bay window with a sandstone window sill. The render has broken on the underside of the window sill and rainwater is now able to penetrate through the brickwork and is showing as water stains on the inside of the painted brickwork. I\'m wondering what is the most cost effective way of fixing the render, whilst ensuring a waterproof seal to prevent future water penetration?

Thank you for including the picture. This is never easy to make a good repair to as you have ‘feathered’ edges and they are always subject to frost. I think you can buy a mortar mix pack from the likes of most DIY Super stores. I would scratch away all the old paint. Paint where you want to fill with a PVA glue. Mix some mortar and fill where you want to. Level that off as best you can then you could put some exterior polyfiller on top to level that all off, rub down and paint with an exterior paint. Either U/C and gloss or a single coat weather paint. Your never going to make a good job but you can make an acceptable finish even though you may have to redo it in perhaps 5yrs. I did the same to a flat I had some years ago and the finished job looked OK.

Best of luck.
