Paint question?

I stripped a cabinet, sanded it, use the pre-finish and then stained it only to realize the wood is so shaded that I don' like it and now want to paint it to have an even finish.  My question is can I paint over the stain or do I need to do all the pre work again?   Also, can you use an exterior stain on an interior project? Thank You
