Ceiling light no longer working

Hi the ceiling light in my daughter's room is no longer working... my daughter thought she would change the light bulb as it needed replaced but thought all light bulbs were the same. She used a smaller fitting bulb an said to me that there was a spark and the light fitting is no longer working even with the correct bulb. What cous be the issue.. My daughter is fine btw ..
